  1. If you are right handed, stand with your left foot slightly forward.  Toss the ball in front of your right shoulder and about 2 to 3 feet above where you can reach with your right hand.  Hit the ball with a straight hand and allow the follow through.  Make sure your right foot only drags.  Do not step without your right foot.  Keep it still if you can, but drag it if you must.

That sounded easy, right?  Here are some tip to help you accomplish those steps.

Practice your toss.  Do about 100 without hitting the ball.

Move to the 3 meter (10 foot) line and stand with your left foot slightly forward.  Toss the ball and serve it.  If you make 5 serves over from the 3 meter line, move 1 step back.  If you make that serve 5 times, take one step back.  Keep serving 5 and then moving back.  If you can not make 5, move 1 step forward and make 5.  Keep doing this drill until you are serving from the service line.

There are 3 major problems with the overhand serve.  Bad toss, stepping with your right foot and your mind thinking you can not make the serve from way back there.  If your mind does not think you can make it, you can not make it.  Starting from up close will boost your confidence.  You will be able to make the serves if you try the above steps.

  2. I don't know your physiology, but if you can't gain advantage from a jumping serve, try a direct over the top serve. This is not only pretty fast, but if you give it serious downspin on impact, it really hooks down over the net. Hard to anticipate where it really is coming down, looks like it is going to be long initially when you strike it, then it hooks down. People first seeing it, are almost always caught flatfooted for the first few, until they realize it is consistent (assuming you practice it). However, you've heard of rotator cuff injuries? You can get that off this type of serve, so be careful!

  3. The tips above are great, but here's some additional reading that might help you a bunch too.

On www.about.com, there is a volleyball section with awesome tips and ideas to help with serving. From that section, you can find a bunch of articles that will help you.

Also, to get a good idea of how the overhand serve works - search "volleyball" on you tube! sometimes it helps to watch some people who are very good at serving...

Hope this helps - good luck!
