Sesi Sao Paulo defeats Al-Arabi Doha by 3-0: FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship
The second day of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship was held on the Sunday, October 9th in Doha, Qatar. In a Pool B match, Sesi Sao Paulo of Brazil and Al-Arabi Doha of Qatar competed as the Brazilian club was able to make a clean sweep over
their opponents.
The start of each set of the game was even but as the frames progressed, the Brazilians were able to get the upper hand. Losing the first two sets of the game got Al-Arabi to step up their game in the third set but the Brazilian club still prevailed in sealing
the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 25-20, 25-20 and 25-22.
The coach of the winning team, Giovane Gavio, made the following comments at the press conference after the match about the performance of his Sesi Sao Paulo: “We started the game playing very well on the counter attack and defense. Al Arabi team have two
good players, who are No. 2 (Jiri Popelka) and No. 6 (Christian Pampel). Today we played against Al Arabi and the match is over and now our minds are just thinking at the next match against Al Ahli from Egypt and then we will think about the Italian team.”
On the other hand, the coach of Al-Arabi Doha, Adel Sennoun, expressed himself in the following manner: “It was a strong match against a much stronger team than us. They were better than us in all of the lines. They have many players who play for the Brazilian
National Team and they have more experience than us. That’s why they deserve the victory.”
The first set of the match saw the Brazilians take the lead at 4-0, an advantage that they were able to stretch till 12-5. The second technical time out came with the Brazilians still leading at 16-9. After this point, the home club was not able to recover
and the Brazilians surged on to bag the match at 25-20.
The second set also saw the Brazilians take the early on at 11-8. The Qatar club did not give up the chase and was able to close in the gap at 15-13. However, that was the best they could do as the Brazilians won the match at 25-20.
The third set of the match saw a tie at 4-4 and another tie at 14-14. The Qatar club put in a good fight but the Brazilians won the set at 25-22.
The lead scorer amongst the two sides was Wallace Martins of Sesi Sao Paulo as he scored a total of 16 points for his team. On the Qatar side, the most active player was Christian Pampel with a total of 12 points for his team.
