Sesil Karatantcheva ousts Ximena Hermoso to move into the main round - XX Copa BBVA Colsanitas 2012
On Monday, Sesil Karatantcheva of Kazakhstan dumped the Mexican contestant, Ximena Hermoso, in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to book a berth in the main round of the XX Copa BBVA Colsanitas tournament. The contest was played on
clay courts in Bogota, Colombia.
Hermoso, just 20-years-old, is still learning the traits of playing against superior ranked players and this would have been another fruitful experience for her. Karatantcheva qualified for the opening round match and inched
one step closer to the tournament prize money of $220,000 on Monday.
The match started with both players swapped breakpoints in the first two games. The stage was set for both players to display their skills and oust their opponents. The Kazakh took advantage of the untraditional start to
the contest and exploited a weakness in her rival’s game play. She forced her to play deep from the baseline; making it hard for Hermoso to generate any pace on her returns. The Mexican was under the cosh and couldn’t handle the pressure; she failed to save
another breakpoint that proved pivotal factor in deciding the first set winner.
Karatantcheva carried the momentum into the second set, breaking her opponent’s serve in the opening game and taking an initial lead that further dismantled the confidence of the Mexican. She consolidated her position with
a successful hold and continued to impress the crowd with her mesmerizing display of all-round shots especially the breathtaking winners down the line.
It was getting pretty ominous for the Mexican. She was faulting on her first serves that always led to a tamed second serve which was pretty easy to negotiate for the Kazakh. With things settling down in the midst of the
second set, both players registered successive holds. Scores progressed to 5-3 in favour of the Kazakh with her opponent serving the following game to stay in the match.
The Mexican contestant was crumbling under pressure and lost the opening point to an eye-startling cross-court winner from her counterpart. Although, she won two successive points but failed to capitalize on the lead. The
Kazakh bagged the final three points of the match and registered a classic triumph over her opponent; entering into the main round of the contest in stylish fashion.
In another qualifying battle, Paula Ormaechea of Argentina ousted the Italian competitor, Corinna Dentoni, in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 to book a berth in the opening round of the tournament.
