Seth Mitchell knocks out Chazz Witherspoon to become the WBO NABO heavyweight champion – Boxing News
Seth Mitchell, the 29-year-old surging American prospect, collected an impressive third-round technical knockout win over his more experienced fellow countryman Chazz Witherspoon, and grabbed the vacant WBO NABO heavyweight title in a 12-round bout held
on April 28, 2012.
The ring for the bout was stretched at Boardwalk Hall situated in Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States and the above duo co-headlined the Saturday night pay-per-view jointly organised and promoted by Gary Shaw Productions and Golden Boy Promotions.
The showdown, which was televised live on HBO in its weekly boxing show, was headlined by the much anticipated WBC light heavyweight title bout between Bernard Hopkins and Chad Dawson.
Seth was in his careers first ever title bout and boasted an undefeated win streak of 24 wins in 25 bouts. The 29-year-old was seriously overshadowed by his opponent’s experience.
Chazz, 30, was in his 33rd bout and was able to collect 22 of his total 30 wins by knockout. Witherspoon has collected three losses and was entering in his second ever title bout.
In addition to a knockout and experience advantage, Chazz also had an upper hand in the height aspect and therefore to some extent had the odds in his favour. The bout kicked off and as it was predicted, Chazz charged in aggressively and rattled Seth by
his fierce attack.
During the whole first round, Chazz continued to control the pace of the bout but the whole scenario took a sharp twist in the second round. From the very beginning, Seth started to develop the momentum and continued throwing long ranged powerful jabs that
connected Chazz’s body and face.
Seth visibly changed the strategy during the second round and targeted Chazz’s body so as to exhaust him early and then in the later rounds batter his face. His plan came to fruition as with the end of the second round, Chazz’s resilience tank was totally
empty.
With the ring of the third bell Seth, also known as ‘The Mayhem’, threw a series of mind jolting jabs at a very close range and flattened Chazz on the ring floor. Witherspoon did break the referee’s 10-count but he was in a numb state of mind and with Seth’s
just two more powerful fists, Chazz leaned with the ring ropes.
The referee halted the bout at two minutes and 31 seconds and officially denoted Seth as the champion. After the bout Seth while sharing his thoughts commented, “I knew Chazz was going to come out and fight, I respected him. I thought he was a well-rounded
fighter, and I knew he comes to fight each and every fight. This was my first time fighting for a belt, so I’m extremely happy now, extremely proud of the way performed.”
With this win Seth has won his first ever title in his careers first ever bout and Chazz, on the other hand, has collected his career’s third defeat in a total 33 bouts.
