Seth Smith shines as Colorado Rockies defeat San Diego Padres 6-3 – MLB Update
Colorado Rockies’ out-fielder, Seth Smith had a remarkable day with the bat as he went 1-for-4 but hit a tie-breaking run in the Rockies’ 6-3 victory against the San Diego Padres at Coors Field, Colorado on June 15.
First four innings of the game went without any run as the pitchers maintained their perfect line mixing with curveballs. At the top of the second inning, the Padres’ centre-fielder Cameron Maybin was struck-out looking and Alberto Gonzalez grounded out
to third base. Similarly, the Rockies’ batters also failed to post any run on the score-board.
During the fifth inning, both the teams scored one run to tie the game 1-all. Rob Johnson hit a solo homer (418 feet) towards left-field at the top of the fifth while Jose Morales hit a tie run at the bottom of the fifth inning when Carlos Gonzalez singled
off to centre-field. Jhoulys Chacin occupied third base.
The Rockies rallied by blasting five runs in the sixth inning and went ahead 6-1. Smith singled to centre-field and Jonathan Herrera posted one run. The last four runs were taken by Todd Helton, Smith, Ty Wigginton and Charlie Blackmon when the batters drove
towards various field positions.
Seventh inning went in favour of the Padres as they reduced the lead 6-2 by adding one run. Chris Denorfia singled to centre-field, Gonzalez scored a single run and Will Venable moved to second base. Eighth inning went score-less as the batters were unable
to score even a single run.
Chacin pitched superbly for the Rockies as he threw six innings with an ERA of 2.81 and permitted just one run on three hits including one earned run. Chacin struck-out seven batters and gave two walks on his 97 pitches. He commented on his feelings and
said, “If it happens, it's good. If not, I'll just keep working all season.”
The Rockies’ manager, Jim Tracy commented on Chacin and said, “Has he done enough to be under consideration? Yes. Will it happen? I don't know. Unfortunately, I don't get a vote. I know the direction I would lean. He's still a little bit new on the scene.”
In the ninth inning, Denorfia singled to left-field and Logan Forsythe contributed one run to end the game 6-3.
