Seth Smith’s homers help Colorado Rockies edge past Cleveland Indians 4-3 – MLB Update
Colorado Rockies’ out-fielder, Seth Smith played superbly right through the game as he hit three RBIs including two home-runs and went 3-for-4 in the Rockies’ 4-3 win against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field, Cleveland on June 21.
The Rockies secured the three-game series 2-0 against the Indians.
The batters were outclassed in the first four innings as they were unable to put any run on the score-board. At the bottom of the fourth inning, Shin-Soo Choo was grounded out to first base and Carlos Santana struck-out looking.
The Rockies’ batters gave some momentum to their team during the fifth inning and scored one run to take an initial 1-0 lead. Jonathan Herrera singled to right centre and Carlos Gonzalez scored the first run of the game.
In the sixth inning, both the teams posted individual runs to move their score-board 3-1. Smith struck a solo homer towards right-field and Jason Giambi scored a single run. On the other side, Asdrubal Cabrera added one run when Choo drove a single-run shot
to centre-field. The pitchers restricted the batters in the seventh inning by tossing the ball in the right area.
During the eighth inning, the Indians contributed two runs to tie the game 3-3 when Travis Hafner singled towards centre-field and Cord Phelps posted one run while the second run was taken by Cabrera on the drive of Travis Buck to right-field.
The Rockies’ manager, Jim Tracy said, “This was a huge character game. To hold a first-place team hitless, give up the lead, and win like that is huge.”
In the ninth inning, Smith hit a one-run homer to right centre-field and the Rockies went ahead 4-3 to end the game. Speaking to reporters, Smith said, “I just tried to drown everything out and focus. In the outfield, I wondered if I'd get hit by lightning.
At bat, I just tried to put a good swing on a pitch.”
The Rockies’ starter, Jhoulys Chacin permitted just one runs on two hits including one earned run in just over six inning pitches. He struck-out seven batters and allowed six walks on his 115 pitches. The relievers were expensive for the Rockies as they
gave two runs on their combined two inning pitches.
