Setters are tall girls with big hands? WTF?!?

Question

Well, i heard that now coaches are looking for tall girls with big hands to be the setter. Don't you think thats stupid, considering setters have to be quick on their feet ; big girls usually aren't quick on their feet.

On my middle school varsity team,

im the setter and i'm like 5'1.

my backup setters (are usually diggers in the back)

are short like me.

the high school has short and nimble setters too.

i think whoever said tall girls dont really know what they are talking baout. whatchya think?

I think you're dumb for listening to them.

whoever said it, can't be no college coach or an ex-pro, so don't listen.

it doesn't matter what size you are as long as you can set.

whatever size you are, if you are the better setter they are going to want you, and if you can play all round, back-row, and even hit now-and then if you were to pass and the secondary setter sets back to you, than your position is secure, just work hard and don't worry about no big girl.

well im short like 5'3 and i set but i like the back better i just like diving for it lol but my coach doesn't want tall people on my team to be setters she wants them to spike because they have more powerful hits and they jump higher

Well I'm on a volleyball team too right now i'm on the A Team for Freshman, and our two setters are both pretty tall, but our coach has the taller players hit and block cuz the can jump higher to hit the ball and block them, and are shortest person is always in the back row digging up balls...I use to be a setter and i'm 5'5" but yah if your a really good setter it wont matter how tall you are.

well if you look at the Div. 1 teams and United States National team the setters are tall.

The shortest player on the natl team is 5'9 and the libero.  As long as your defense is good at passing the ball up in the air or where it needs to be it is better to have a taller setter. The reason most setters you see are short is because most small unelite schools dont have enough superb tall players to play in every position. and you definately want to have tall hitter/blockers, if nothing else.

A tall setter is also good to have at the net, they have more power and its easier to make sets on a bad pass or dump the ball over for a kill. Some schools also have combination S/ MH or S/OH with them setting from the back row(b/c its harder for them to dig but they still have good hands) and hitting/blocking in the front row because they are tall/can jump.

Well... Setters can be tall but they don't have to be. front line people are the ones that should be tall!

i disagree im 5'3 with small hands.......size duznt matter-its all about if u can move lik lightning, get under th ball, and get into posistion to set. ur hands just ahve to be soft.

Most setters are usually shorter, my current setter is about 5'6, the second string setter is about 5'1. I think coaches like taller setters (5'9 +) mainly so they can have a quicker offence, the set would be quicker because they are closer to the middle hitters height. Also they are able to hit on an out of system ball. They also have the chance to tip easier. But i dont think it really matter about the height. It might be a little bit of an advantage for a taller setter but not much.

i don't think that it matters if u r tall, short, fat, or skinny.  if u can set, u can set.  u just have 2 b able 2 get 2 yur spot quick enough

That means i would have to play libero, cuz im only 5 foot, with a jump and spring in my step. :D That is not true, because setters need to be quick on their feet, and have to be able to get under the ball, so the "tall" girls would be on their knees trying to set.  little awkward, right?

well on my team there are two setters one of them is short and quick and she gets to like everyball, the other girl is taller and she is pretty quick but i think that the coach has her set is because she is tall enough to get good tips over the blockers.
