Setting help?

Help! I'm in serious need of ANY advice you can give me. I've been playing volleyball for almost 2 years and have been playing outside hitter most of my career... today was my first practice and my coach said I have a good chance to make varsity by setting.... the problem is, I know very little about setting. So far my 2 biggest problems have been my position on the court (you probably won't be able to help much there) and I continually double-touch the ball. please give me any advice, or practicing tips you can give to help improve my setting.

cheers!

  1. With the double touch thing, you really need to get your feet planted because if you are moving while you set the ball it can cause you to double touch it. Even if you don't some refs that arn't that good are taught to call it a double touch if you are moving even if it turns out fine. The best way to practice setting is just getting lots of practice. Having someone throw the ball to you over and over again and just getting the feel for it helps a lot. For drills on you own setting against the wall with arms fully extended and just using your hands and legs (little to no arms) is good. Make sure if you do use your arms don't bring the ball in but meet it there or you'll be called for a lift. I'm not sure what you mean by position on the court but if you mean where you stand (which i dont think you do) it's a few steps in from the right and at the net less than an arms length away.

Tip: you always want to be agressive and be a leader. Coaches look for that in setters. But dont be afraid to call help, just only do it when you think it will better the ball, and you can't get to it.

    I hope that helps :)

alsooo::: catch the ball right above your forhead, if you drop it, it should hit you in the forhead not the top of your head.. or any where else

  2. when setting the ball, make your hands into the shape of the ball, let the fingertips do the work, u will use mostly the thumbs and forefingers to set, the position  needs to be like a squirrel holding a nut up above its head or like a sumo wrestler holding...something  over its head. push the ball away from you, the best way not to double touch the ball is to mae sure when youre setting that your wrists arent bent back all the way, ( i make that mistake too, when i dont want to back up) and make sure that you push the ball AWAY from u not up above u

  3. for setting my coaches told me that you should but your hands on your hips and spread your fingers out then take them off but dont move your fingers then put your hands above your forehead and you should see a little triangle in between your hands and this should be your setting position. also when you set you should you should never flick your wrists out to the side after the ball leaves your hands or swing your arms to the side because that could be why you're double touching it. also when you set when you're up at the net you should always have your right foot forward because if you have your left foot forward you could accidentally set it over the net instead of to the player and if you have your right foot forward the ball would stay on your side of the court so even if you didnt set it perfectly to the setter someone else on the court could get it. Hope this helped :]

  4. when u sett have both feet in line wiht ur shoulders then when  then ball comes just push it up with ur finger tips on both hands at the same time
