  1. On my team, the most common sets for us a 1, 5, and 9.

My coach explained to us that there are 9 zones on the next. 1 is the power position, 5, is the middle and 9 is the out side.

    1-Nice high set to power

5-Nice medium height set to middle

    9-Nice high set to outside

red-nice high set to back row behind power

white-nice high set to back row behind middle

blue-nice high set to back row behind outside.

51-very quick low set to middle

91-very quick low set to outside

Then you have your A, B, and Cs, which are quick back row hits.

2 is a high set directly on the ten foot line of the court for front row to fake hit and back row to slam from behind.

  2. every team can call their sets whatever they want. These are the most common, I think:

    1- quick middle

    2- low middle

    3- high middle

    4- high outside

    shoot- quick outside

C- quick between middle and outside

    5- back set

back row sets are a variety of things. the technical names are A for either right or left back, pipe for middle back, and B for whatever A isn't. my team uses Red, White and Blue.

  3. okay i dont really know if this will answer what youre asking but ill try.  [=

4 or 8 is a high outside set [most common]

    2 or 4 is a middle hit

1 or a quick is a fast very quick set to the middle

3 or shoot is like the 1 set but in between the middle and outside hitter.

9 or 7 is a high back set behinf the setter [right side, usuallly a left hand hitter]

5 is the same a the 1 set but right behind the setter.

C or red, is a back left hit from the back row

B or pipe or white, is a back row hit from the middle [libero or DS]

A or blue, back row hit from the right back.

when you run a 6-2 you have 6 hitters[everyone hits] and 2 setters, so one in the front row and one in the back row.

a 4-2 is when you have 4 hitters and 2 setters, same as a 6-2 except your setters dont hit  [[most basic for developmental teams]]

or a 5-1 [more high level] where there are 5 hittters and only one setter so no matter where the setter is in rotation she has to some how get to the ball and make a good set.

i reallyy hope this helped! good luck!!!

  4. if your team does a 5-1 rotation, read this webpage

    http://www.storksvolleyball.org//volleyb...

if your team runs the 6-2:

    http://www.storksvolleyball.org//volleyb...

if you scroll down it shows pictures about the different sets for each different rotation, plus a lot more on the defense and rotations. good luck!

  5. Old school says:

1 is the left side, 9 is the right...with the others filling in across the net so:

    1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9

Then the second number is the height:

    1, very low or 'quick'

2, low but not right out of the setters hands

3, higher (seeing a trend yet?)

    4, high

    5, really high

You then use the two digits to know exactly what kind of set is expected.  A 51 is a quick to the middle blocker.  A 14 is your classic outside set.  A 11 is a shoot to the outside, etc.
