Question:

Setting up 2.1 system on my LCD tv?

Hi. I have a LG LCD television which I'd like to connect my recently bought basic 2.1 system to.

Supplied with the 2.1 system was one cable only, a 3.5mm "headphone" end to a 2RCA (red and white) end. Am I correct to assume that the 3.5mm end plugs into my tv and the 2RCA plugs into the rear of my sub into the "input" sockets?

If that is the case; I do not actually have a socket on my tv labelled "headphone", but one labelled "PC Sound" which looks exactly the same as a standard 3.5mm and indeed my cable fits into it fine and secure. Should this work as a standard headphone socket?

As it stands, I've checked my 2.1 by plugging said cable into my laptop headphone socket and it works fine, so I guess my main question is, should plugging the cable into my "PC sound" socket automatically mute the tv speakers and route sound through the cable, or is there an actual setting I need to activiate on my tv to do so?

Consulting the manual yields no results.

Many thanks.

  1. The PC sound jack you see on the TV is an Input and does not enter into what you are trying to do.  If you have a red white pair of RCAs marked (out) you should leave the cable supplied out and just go get a standard right left (red white) RCA stereo cable and make your connection that way. You may or may not have to turn the TVs internal mute on to route the audio to the audio out jacks. You might be better off running audio out put directly from your source device (I'm assuming a cable or satellite box) directly to the 2.1 system via the Digital Optical connection if it is available on both ends (sorce and 2.1 system). It will yield better sound and better results.
