Setting up a home server as a gateway?

I'm trying to setup my server to run as a gateway.

For such reasons as content filtering, antivirus and firewall.

Its a Dell PowerEdge, running Windows 2003 Server with two network cards.

How do I setup the cards to work properly?

  1. Install Routing and Remote Access from Configure your Server Wizard. You have one internal (private) NIC and one Public. You have to set your router and public NIC to allow your NIC to have a staic IP address. Under Static Routes (Properties of RRAS) you have to configure a static route that says

    0.0.0.0   0.0.0.0   0.0.0.0   (Public Interface name) Metric 1 Looks crazy but you need it.

    You do not route from the private NIC.

    It also helps if you set up your pivate LAN on another subnet from your Static IP on your NIC.

    You can get most of this from your Help under your server. It has good help funcions.

    I would also set up a DHCP server to assign IP address and Gateway and DNS for your Subnet. Is your server DNS, I would also make it a domain controller. More secure. I know there is a security consideration for DHCP on a Domain Controller, so go to Microsoft and get info on "Hardening Servers" for The rolls it Performs.
