Setting up a new Philips DVD Recorder

Question

We have no owners's manual with our new DVD. We have tried to set it up using the Quick Start Guide. The Welcome menu won't appear on screen. We have followed the instructions to use channel down button on the TV or AV button but this doesn't make the menu appear on the screen.
