Question:

Setting up a phone line?

I have moved into a property that has been empty for a few months and there is a BT phone socket, with a dialling tone, but I cannot dial. I have tried ordering an activation through BT's website and it says a re-activation costs £125, but when I try to order it a one-off charge of £125 shows on the payment confirmation page, therefore I would be paying £250 just to re-activate the line, when it should only cost half this. I've tried conacting BT over this matter, but all they tell me is I can find the answer on their website, they don't tell me where. How can I go about this matter, and if possible are there other companies I can set up a new line with, and at what cost?

  1. You shouldn't be trying to reactivate, you need to apply for a new line - here's the page :http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/co...

It tells you how to proceed, including what happens if they can use the existing copper etc.

  2. Did you have a phone in your name at your last address because if you did you should be able to get it done for free and take your old number with you ring bt and ask for sales. Look on the back of your old bill to get the number you need or try this 0800-800-150

  3. That sounds a bit steep for simply reactivating a line that's already there.  I would consider getting a cell phone or internet phone instead.

  4. Forget the phone that's there - phone BT tell them you just moved in and want a phone installed, if they still want £250 tell them you will go to Virgin or Tiscali

  5. Don't re activate it - that's for if you get cut off for non payment.

    I'm with Virgin. Try them.

  6. I live in Hull and we have an independant telephone company. We do not have BT phone lines which means we do miss out on offers advertised by other companies but out phone charges cannot be beaten anyway. For us to have a phone line activated it cost £17.50. You could move to Hull LOL
