Question:

Setting up a website?

I would like to set up a website for my childminding business. Unfortunately I have no idea how to go about it. I've had a look around at various sites, but I am even more confused. I am computer literate so I know I would be able to do it once pointed in the right direction. Which is the best website company to use and how much will it cost? I don't want to spend much as it is more for information rather than generating much business. I would need at least 12 pages maybe more and having a password protected area would also be good.

  1. sounds like a good idea for a niche site, you just need a domain name, webspace, plus some seo knowledge to make sure you get people to the site, i'd use site build it they take care of all the technical stuff allowing you to get on with creating your pages

  2. It can be false economy to try it yourself; computer literacy isn't much help when it comes to creating something that looks good :-)

A professional design company will help you by designing a great-looking site that is quick to operate and gets good results from search engines. You'll need a domain name, web-hosting and the design/development costs. What do you actually want to do with the password-protected area? Don't add in unnecessary costs by having things made which you won't use.

Look for a design company local to you; if in Oxfordshire, try http://www.icatching.co.uk/oxford-webdes...

  4. Hi.

For a webpage like your after, i'd suggest going with a host such as hostgator. They offer a site builder that allows you to set up and modify your website all online. During the sign up process with these guys too they give you the oppertunity to get a www.yourname.com at an extra cost.

There reliability and service is exellent. I have been a customer with them for years and hold a reseller account for my clients.

    I Hope this has helped.

  5. What you need:

    1. A Website Developer (Someone to create the website)

    2. You ! (To tell website developer what you want them to code)

    3. A Web host (Don't need to be expensive, company websites don't generate massive traffic. around $30 a year)

    4. A Domain (www.daisy-minding.com - around $10 year)

    --------------------------

    1. Website Developer

This is how you get your website made.

I am a developer myself, I specialise in PHP & MySQL. Written in PHP your website would be secure, and easy to manage! Parents can log in, and you can for example give them messages privately and public messages.

    OR

You can ask for static HTML web pages create a web page that is the same every time. Parents can still log in to a secure area, but its content would be have to modified in HTML by yourself. So possibly more confusing, and require you to learn html.

In either case, You can go to a website like sitepoint.com marketplace. Where people like me will "BID" to offer you what you want for your Budget.

    --------------------------

    2. You !

Write down the names for the 12 pages, what kind of content do you want on each page. (short examples). Give informative descriptions of each page and send this to everyone who wants to bid on your website. They should then tell you how much it would cost.

    --------------------------

    3. A Web-host

This is where your files (website) will be saved.

This is where it may get annoying as their are Many hosts, offering different "packages" but most are offering the same service. At varied different prices. One I recommend is streamline.net as it costs £13.99 a year (cheap) and comes with a Free Domain (step 4).

    --------------------------

    4. A Domain

You need to chose a domain that suits you. If you have a company you probably want the company name as the domain (if available). If you are wanting to use the website to attract new customers you may want a "SEO" domain such as www.city-childminding.com where city is where your business runs from. Godaddy.com are low cost for domains.

    --------------------------

Setting up a website may be complex! Which is why you may wish to gain advice of someone you know good with computers to help. I do all 4 steps myself weekly for clients and myself so if you require any more help, let me know.

I am unsure why the thumbs down? Potentially worrying for the people "Answering".

Good Luck With Your Website! (and good luck with the children. lol)

  6. Buy Dreamweaver CS3 by adobe. You can create a website as easily as a poster, without all of the html.

  7. If you wont a free website and you have no experience using HTML or programming i suggest you use www.freewebs.com

  8. Well, if you want, the cheapest way is to find a good domain, buy one, and then do the CSS yourself, which isn't too hard :]

Do you understand the concepts of makings a site? It'd be useful if you had a family member who's a computer tech to explain what you need to go through before you finish a site.
