  1. Are you sure your router is a wireless router?

It sounds like you are using a wired router and think that plugging a wireless adapter in to your pc will create a wireless network.

You need a wireless router. A new laptop would find any wireless networks the first time you turn it on.

  2. The laptop has a switch to turn the wireless on and off.  You have to find it and turn the wireless on.  Some laptops also let you do that on one of the F keys.  Look for the wireless symbol (3 decreasing radius 90° arcs with a dot in the middle - hold the Fn key down when you press that key to cycle the wireless on-off-on-off, etc.

  3. Go to Start/Control Panel/Network and Internet Connections/Network Connections.  Under the title LAN or High-Speed Internet there should be an entry labeled "Wireless Network Connection".  Make sure that this is Enabled.  RIGHT click on it and click on "View Available Wireless Networks".  You should see your network in the list.  Select you network and click on the Connect button.  If you have encryption turned on in your router be prepared to enter the security information.
