Settling in Mumbai?

I am currently in New York but I want to settle in Mumbai. Since I'm of Bihari origin , I want to know if there will be any problems by these MNS people. Will they target NRIs of bihari origin?

Can you please give your opinions as to how safe is Mumbai.

  1. Your ethnicity will have no affect on your safety. Mumbai is relatively safer than the other cities like Delhi and Gurgaon, where I'm from. Just make sure you know people around and that you can call someone for basic things, like if you are out of gas or something.

Just be cautious and don't go out alone late at night and general precautions, you should be fine!

    Best of luck!

  2. there won't be any problems as far as your ethnicity goes at all. mumbai is one of the best places to live in - the feel in this city is something to be experienced. the true spirit of mumbai is not portrayed in films about the underworld, media reporting violence, etc...it's in the helpfulness of the people living here, the warmth of the community here, the feeling of belonging, mixing with the masses and not worrying about it.

However, be prepared for a) high real estate prices, b) above normal expenditures as compared to other parts of the country, and c) the mumbai monsoons.

as far as safety is concerned, you can be rest assured that mumbai is not as dangerous as people make it out to be. if you were to be robbed or nabbed, whether you are in NY or in Gurgaon or in Mumbai - the chances are equal. Well, actually, Gurgaon - there's a higher chance - it's not a place that you would like to settle in for sure.

Take the plunge - come to Mumbai - call it your own.

    All the best!

  3. It's nice to say bombay's safer and all but that's an opinion, thats fast changing. And much as it hurts me to say so, its the truth.

If you're female and living alone in the city, its best to have a few reliable friends to have as your support system.

Don't stress about ethinicity because shady political parties only pick on lower middle class junta unable to retaliate i.e taxi drivers and the lot.

Keep a low profile and don't go around abusing any of their glorious leaders publicly - which I'm sure you won't even if you're sorely tempted - and all should go well.

Also look to put up in an area that is relatively cosmopolitan in nature and you would then avoid any unpleasantness.

Believe me, we're still in a society, where NRIs get treated like demi gods and dollars still retain some worth!

    have a good trip!

    Cheers.

p.s: i love bombay and i'm not mahrashtrian - and i've lived a relatively safe life so far - and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the country!
