Seve Benson lands his third Challenge Tour title, The Barclays Kenya Open: Wrap-up Part-1
Englishman Seve Benson surged to the top of the Barclays Kenya Open on the final day of the event, clinching his third Challenge Tour victory on the Playoff.
The event organised at the scenic Muthaiga Golf Course near Nairobi, saw the rise of the 25-year-old Benson, when he took the final day by storm.
He carded an impressive five-under, 66 to forge a playoff with the rampaging Dane Lasse Jensen.
Benson came from behind in the final round, trailing the leader by three strokes. He fell for an early bogey on the first hole on the front but shot back in form, pulling in birdie on the very next hole.
He carded two more before making the turn and another consecutive two birdies on the opening holes at the back.
He closed his round with a birdie on the penultimate hole to eventually deny Jensen the title. He birdied the first playoff while Jansen fell for the massive pressure of the final hole and stumbled on a bogey.
Benson said, "I knew I had to shoot a good score today because I didn’t think it was likely that the leaders would be coming back towards me".
"I knew Lasse would be thinking he was still leading when he teed off the 18th and would take an iron. That makes it harder to birdie, so I was expecting a play-off".
"It’s never easy winning, but I have won twice before on the Challenge Tour and have spent the last three years playing on The European Tour, so I used all that experience to help me," he said.
Benson has come out of a severe back injury that occured in the year 2010, and suffered most of the proceeding year due to his illness.
The Wentworth club player has managed to further inflate his position on the money list with a boost of €30,400 cheque from the Barclays Kenya Open.
He has now come out in full to challenge the tour field in the next events. Meanwhile Jensen, who was the co-overnight leader in the final round, will have to wait to bag his maiden Challenge Tour title.
The Dane has been looking for his maiden Challenge Tour victory and has done well in the current season and has been making swift progress with each passing event.
