Seve Benson relishes the opportunity of playing in the D+D Real Czech Challenge Open
Seve Benson is relishing the opportunity of participating in the D+D Real Czech Challenge Open, the third last tournament of the 2012 European Challenge Tour season.
This is the first time, since the 2008 Ypsilon Golf Challenge, that the European Challenge Tour event will be held in Czech Republic.
In 2008, Benson came out of the field as victorious, after defeating Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Branden Grace in the playoffs.
“I remember being three shots back going into the last round,” said Benson of the win in 2008. “It was a really windy, rainy day in the last round and I shot one under”.
He added, “I holed a really good putt on the second play-off hole for birdie after Cabrera- Bello had already made birdie. It was a tough putt and I hit it quite hard so luckily it hit the middle of the cup and that was a really important moment”.
This week, the Englishman hopes to repeat the heroics of his second European Challenge Tour victory at the Kunetická Hora Golf Club.
The 25-year-old currently lists 30th in the European Challenge Tour Rankings. According to the European Tour qualifying policy, the top-20 players from the Challenge Tour will get invitations to play on the tier-one tour in 2013.
If one fails to finish among the top-20, he will have to participate in the European Tour Q-School in order to earn his card for the upcoming season.
Therefore, Benson desperately needs at least one strong finish in the remaining three tournaments this season, to make it to the top-20 in the standings.
“I’m feeling good about this year and this week and hopefully I can get another win under my belt before the end of the season,” he said.
Benson has played on the European Tour twice in his career – he qualified for the 2009 and 2011 European Tour seasons.
He believes that he has all what it takes to make it to the bigger stage. In addition to that, he stated that he plans to follow the footsteps of Cabrera-Bello and Grace – the South Africans are currently regarded as one of the best players on the European
Tour.
