Seven New York Giants’ players miss first practice for the Super Bowl XLVI – NFL News Update
The National Football Conference (NFC) champions, New York Giants, kicked off their campaign for the Super Bowl XLVI on Thursday, January 26, 2012, when they conducted their first training session in which seven players did not participate.
According to the team management, the players who missed the practice were injured and it was in the team’s best interest to keep them away from any kind of workout.
Giants are going to play against the American Football Conference (AFC) champions, New England Patriots, in the Super Bowl, on February 5 in Indianapolis.
With around 10 days left in the game, the management does not want the players to immediately take part in any intense workout, which could aggravate the minor injuries the players are dealing with.
The players who missed the practice are cornerbacks, Corey Webster (hamstring) and Will Blackmon (knee), running back, Ahmad Bradshaw (foot), centre, David Baas (abdomen/neck), linebacker, Chase Blackburn (calf), wide receiver, Hakeem Nicks (shoulder), and
linebacker Jacquian Williams (foot).
When asked about the status of these players and the reason for missing the practice, Giants coach, Tom Coughlin, commented:
“We are trying to be smart and not aggravate something that is there that will be able to be managed in a short amount of time and make sure that there is not anything else that happens.”
Nicks, who had hurt, his shoulder during the NFC championship game against San Francisco 49ers, told reporters that his injury was not severe and that he was sitting out of the training just to relax his body.
He said:
"Just resting my body, getting my body back and ready. It's a little beat up."
Meanwhile, Bass hopes that he would be ready to take part in Friday’s practice session.
Bass told reporters:
“I got my neck issue and it should be fine. I massage, ice, all the normal stuff. But (I) should be back out there tomorrow doing stuff.”
Moreover, Giants’ safety, Tyler Sash, who suffered a concussion while playing against the 49ers, has been declared fit by the medical board.
Sash underwent medical examination and cleared all the tests before receiving a green signal. He took part in the complete training on Thursday.
By the look of it, the Giants do not seem to be in a condition where they should be worried about absence of their players.
However, if they continue to stay out of the field before the team travels to Indianapolis, the management will seriously need to consider different options.
