Question:

Seven days in Seattle Area in late October!

Any ideas about what I could do, see, stay etc? I'm 34, so I've worked through the 'Hostel Phase' and don't mind spending cash on clean, friendly accommodation. Can the city occupy me for a week, or will I have to include other places in Washington?

  1. Honestly, and I really LOVE Seattle and live here, but I think a week is a bit much for just Seattle!  There really is a lot to see here, but you won't necessarily need the whole week for it!  Don't get me wrong, as I'm not saying that there isn't a lot to do in Seattle, but you can get through most of the touristy stuff in a day or two, more in a few days, and have seen most of the Seattle area.  If you want to, you def can occupy your time enjoyably for a week in Seattle, but you can also do much more!

Fortunately, (well, fortunately if you have a passport!) you can head up to Vancouver BC as well while you are in town.  Vancouver BC is a fantastic city and it's great to have such a cool and beautiful city just to the north of us!  The Chinatown up there is fantastic and one of the best you'll find this side of China!

Also, Portland is just to the south a few hours drive and is also a pretty cool place to visit!  I would highly recommend Vancouver over Portland, but you could probably squeeze in both pretty easily (and go to Portland only if you have no passport).  It's a nicely set up town and great to bike in!

In late October, there will probably be pretty sketchy weather around.  It's pretty hit-or-miss by that time and it falls heavily on the "miss" side (I think, is "miss" the worse side?).  That being said, bring some decent rain gear/light rain jacket and semi-warm clothes (sweater/pullover, etc.).  It shouldn't be frigid, but will most likely be pretty chilly (depending on where you're coming from).

  2. Try a travel or hotel website to find hotels.

Check out Pike Place Market, which can occupy a whole day. The Space Needle, obviously, the Experience Music Project (or EMP), the Pacific Science Center, the Seattle Aquarium (although I don't like the Aquarium too much) the Woodland Park Zoo (awesome), the Seattle Art Museum, or just wander around and shop! There are a lot of other places to go too, but I can't think of the specific names- museums, malls, and whatnot.

  3. Space needle but do not eat there cause the food isn't all that great. Spaghetti factory is a must if you like spaghetti. Go to Southcenter mall they just opened up a whole bunch of new clothing stores like H&M.  Most of the new stores are 2 storys. Go to seattle center which is right next to the space needle it has like a canival-ish thing in there. Go to downtown seattle and walk around the area cause IT'S HUGE! and the shopping is GREAT!  and the number one thing you should check out is PIKE PLACE MARKET. It's next to the water you can buy fresh fish, flowers, seafood, candy, and etc. You should go on this tour  called ride the ducks where your riding around town learning about the history and then it goes into the water touring you around heres the website

  4. The weather in late October can be a problem, wet and chilly in some years and quite nice in others, so plan on mostly indoor activities. There should be more than enough to keep you occupied, but a little exploring beyond Seattle is recommended, if only spending an afternoon on the ferry ride to Bainbridge or Bremerton. There is  not a great deal to do at the other ferry terminal, but there are great views of the city coming and going, and the ride is a relaxing way to spend 30 minutes to an hour riding in each direction. If the weather is good, rent a car and drive to Mt. Rainier.

As for places to stay, Seattle has a bunch of fairly reasonably priced B&Bs scattered at the edges of the downtown area. A quirky place in the University District, an easy bus ride downtown with a university oriented district nearby is College Inn, 4000 University Way NE, Seattle, WA - (206) 634-2385‎
