Seven sophomores geared up for Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park
The Grade 2 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park is an ideal chance for those 3-year-olds, who remained unsuccessful in the Triple Crown trail. The mega event has attracted seven quality runners, who are all set to show their magic on June 30th.
Teeth of the Dog seems to be the leading contestant. After making two poor outings, the dashing colt unchained the shackles, registering an emphatic victory in the Easy Goer Stakes at Belmont Park earlier this month.
Despite the fact that the colt is yet to win a graded race, he has an obvious chance in the Dwyer Stakes. On his charge’s recent good show, Michael R. Matz said:
“He came out of the Easy Goer very well. It’s only been three weeks since the race, but he’s been doing well. If he runs well in this, we’d probably look at a race like the Jim Dandy, but we’d keep our options open.”
The maverick runner went through a fine training session earlier this week. He is likely to get the highest starting price and will be ridden by J. Rosario, who recently moved to New York from California.
Unstoppable U is another runner with fair chances. Kenneth G. McPeek’s trainee made a fantastic start to his career, sealing two back-to-back victories. After blitzing his opponents in the Maiden Special Weight at Aqueduct in March, the dashing colt continued
his good form to ensure the top rank in the Allowance Optional Claiming the following month.
After grabbing the top prize twice, the gray son of Exchange Rate stepped into the graded event, but failed to make an impression. The Grade 1 Belmont Stakes saw him finishing sixth behind Union Rags.
Despite admitting the fact that his charge was unable to make an impact at Belmont Park, McPeek is confident of better results in the future.
“I understand the Belmont was really ambitious, but this horse has always shown a lot of talent. I think he ran respectable considering he didn’t have the foundation. For him to stay right near the lead for almost a mile and a quarter shows he’s a nice colt
in his own right,” he shared.
