Seven veteran Australian cricketers lost their central contracts with Cricket Australia as the selectors look forward to giving more opportunities to emerging talent.
Cricket Australia, on Tuesday, announced a list of 25 centrally contracted players, which included several new names.
However, seven players from the 2010-2011 list, failed to get their contracts renewed this time.
One surprising axing was the opening batsman and the leading International run scorer, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Simon-Mathew-Katich-c90404.
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Mark-Jefferson-Hilditch-c44498 conceded that it would be quite devastating on Simon’s part, especially after making a strong comeback into the national side earlier this year.
Katich’s struggling form cost him his place in the Aussie side, but the 35-year-old http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Western-Australia-c865 batsman, fought his way back with an impressive tally of runs.
Hilditch admitted that that he has been a fantastic player for Aussies and has been extremely successful.
However, he said that the selectors are now looking forward to find a new opening pair, at least before the next Ashes, which will be hosted by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 in 2013.
"…it was a http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Richard-Griffith-c41953 decision, obviously really hard on Simon,” said Hilditch at the contract announcement in Adelaide.
“but in our view the opening partnership is critical, it takes time to get a good opening partnership and we think now the time is right to make sure we have the right opening partnership come the Ashes,” he added.
Other names that failed to make the list of centrally contracted Australian cricketers include, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CJ-McKay-c1265.
Katich’s manager, Robert Joske, said that the opening batsman is really disappointed by the snub and would take some time to think about his future before speaking publicly.
"Simon's bitterly disappointed but we're going to take a look at all of the options," said Joske while talking to a leading cricket website.
"There's lots of options we'll look at, both playing and non-playing, before we decide what's best for Simon and his family. We'll wait until the dust settles," he further added.
