  1. 1-5 = forwards

    6-12 = backs

forwards all play the same role, as to drag in the defense and work at the ruck/maul area.  number 6 is usually the playmaker- hes usually the most skillfull player in the team and directs the attack. rover im not completely sure but seems to be the utility player that can play a forward/back orientated game, so to play either role when required.

Anyway, in the end its really all about watching the game and having fun =)

  2. For the side that is on the field, 1-3 are the forwards and they are the key players in scrums and line-outs; 4 is the scrum -half, and 5-7 are the backs from "fly-half" to "wing."  This can all vary in open field play though.  The number 7 is often the "speed demon" or best runner of well organized/very skilled teams.

I am guessing that what you call a "rover" is what some clubs would call a sweeper.  On defense, they play a role similar to fullback and are speedy, reliable tacklers who can coordinate the defense.  Unlike 15s, where you have back row players "roving" or filling in wherever necessary, in 7s the defense must be very disciplined and maintain a zone where they match up against the opponent in front of them.  One person to a tackle.  But line breaks and gaps happen often and the "rover" (sweeper) must prevent the line break from becoming a try.

  3. i dont know what a rover is... but if you go to the usa rugby site theres info on 7's... go to the top left corner, click on "fans" and look on that page for a link to "spectator's guide to sevens"

  4. when i have played sevens, the rover was simply the person who played about 12-16 meters behind the 6 man line of defence.(shouting orders, etc..).. that is if you are playing 6 up w/ 1 back... he is usually very skilled.. and your best tackler, for he is to tackle anyone that breaks the line.  he also is the one that initiates the counter attack if there is a knockon or loose ball (get it to him quickly to start a counter)... just remember many teams play differing styles..
