Could this be the start of WWIII. World war two started over the aggression of Hitler. Are we watching history repeat itself?? NATO seems to lack any ability to defend against aggression and the US alone lacks the power.

  1. Even if the US were not overstretched in Iraq and Afghanistan I don't think they could have stopped what happened. And why should they?

Georgia used to be part of the Soviet Union. Maybe it has to go back into Russia. Why not? Are you going to risk the well being of the free world for one insignificant little place?

If you really wish to stop Putin, look to the Chechens and how they kicked the Russians out of their country. Takes courage and nerve and quite a few lives. And they never expected anyone to do it for them.

We have to qualify our ideas about having to intervene in events that we as outsiders may never be able to change.

  2. There is no comparison, Georgia attacked 1st. Georgia is not in NATO

  3. No, your analogy is so flawed as to be ridiculous. If Russia had actually planned to take over Georgia, their tanks would have rolled into Tbisili in the first day of the war. I mean, Russia has more tanks than Georgia has soldiers, whatever Georgian president Saakashvili was smoking when he ordered his troops to storm Tskhinvali, I don't recommend it.

We are seeing Russia draw a line in the mountains so to speak, and reassert itself as a regional power.

World War Two ended over 60 years ago, Hitler was a unique evil brought to power by a combination of historical blunders. Comparisons to Hitler and WW2 are almost always way off the mark.

  4. Could be.  If Russia gets everything it wants out of this deal and sees there are no consequences to it's agressiveness, they'll keep expanding.

To Billy B who said that this is not like what Hitler did.  Georgia did attack first, but they attacked a separatist area of their own country.  Kind of like if the USA attacked Virginia if they tried to cede from the Union - No one declared war on the US for attacking its rebels to preserve its union. Russia had no right to invade Georgia for the same reasons.

  5. Yes they will. Putin and the Russian commies want the USSR back. The world will not stop them.

  6. I am far more concerned that one of Middle east American aggresions will start WW3 than this.

  7. history IS repeating itself....

our main enemy now in the techno age: CONSUMERISM

  8. i think that it is going to re-start itself

i thought that w/ iraq but it didnt happen...but now it is coming all together..........it's going to start =[

  9. Very interesting question. I don't believe President Bush will choose to get involved deeply since he is almost done. I wonder how the two candidates feel about the issue.

  10. history IS repeating: fascist Saakashvili's regime is commiting genocide of osetian people.

63 years ago heroic actions of soviet (consisted of russian AND georgian AND osetian and many other people) army freed all the humanity from fascist regime of Hitler. nowadays heroic russian troops are stopping fascist Saakashvili's regime from killing osetian civilians. history is repeating itself and russia is saving the humanity from fascism again

  11. Russia is not doing anything the USA isn't doing.  there is only room for one aggressor, and like history shows, it looks to me, also, like war is inevitable

  12. It was actually Germany AND the Soviet Union who conquered Poland almost 70 years ago. At that time, the two countries were allies.

  13. Yes the world will let Russia have its way with Georgia.

It's not like when Hitler invaded Poland, it's more like when Hitler carved up Czechoslovakia. Like in 1938 the Western Democracies were not happy with Hitler but they were not willing to go to war over the land grab of a small nation.

Georgia is in a similarly bad situation.

  14. Russia is not trying to take over Georgia. Neither does it have intentions for world domination. There's no comparison. Two completely different situations.

  15. this is completely different georgia attacked russia first and georgia isn't in NATO. Besides nobody wants to go to war with russia and start world war 3 as you're suggesting.
