Several Option on the Cards for Villa
Aston Villa have begun the search for a new manager following Martin O'Neill's sudden departure on Monday. The club is reported to be considering several candidates, but has yet to comment on any prospective appointments.
US national team coach Bob Bradley is reported to be of interest for the club. Bradley, contracted with the national team until December, has spoken positively about a potential move to European football.
"I have said over and over as well that I am always excited about new and different challenges," he said when asked about the Villa job. "Certainly coaching in Europe at some point is something that I would love to do."
Bradley has never managed a team outside of the US, but he has a long history in football management in the country. He began his career with Ohio University in 1981.
Eriksson Said to Be Interested
Meanwhile, The Guardian has reported that Swedish manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is also interested in the vacancy, according to sources close to him.
Eriksson was ousted by the Ivorian Football Federation following the national team's early exit in this year's World Cup.
The 62-year-old has strong ties to the Premier League, having managed the English national team between 2001 and 2006. He also managed Manchester City during the 2007/2008 season.
Eriksson's track record renders him the most experienced candidate being considered – and the most expensive to sign.
Can Jol Be Lured from Ajax?
Villa have also been reported to be interested in former Tottenham manager Martin Jol, currently with Ajax Amsterdam.
The Dutch club recently fought off Fulham's interest in Jol's services, though, and may do the same if Villa make an offer.
Former Villa player Gareth Southgate, who managed Middlesbrough between 2006 and 2009, is another potential candidate.
Villa's first Premier League match of the season is against West Ham this Saturday.
Reserves coach Kevin MacDonald has taken charge of the first team for the time being. O'Neill has offered to help with the transfer of his responsibilities.
