Question:

Severe bladder pain after removal of foley catheter

4 days ago, I gave birth to my son via c-section. I had my foley catheter placed on Thursday evening and it was removed on Saturday morning, so it was in place for approximately 36 hours. After removing the catheter, I have had severe pain when urinating. It's not a burning pain or anything, but more like a severe, sharp pain when emptying my bladder. It begins to hurt as I feel my bladder filling up and make me feel like I have to urinate immediately. If I don't empty my bladder, the pain will continue to increase. Then when I do empty my bladder, it does okay during urination, but seizes up at the end of the urine flow and is extremely painful. It's a horrible pain, like a bladder spasm I suppose, but even what the doctor gave me to control bladder spasms has not worked. It's still excruciating when I have to urinate and I dread it every time. Any ideas what this might be? I just got discharged from the hospital today so I haven't had a chance to talk to my doctor about it all yet. I'm hoping it gets better! I can handle the pain of the c-section...it's the pain of the bladder that I can't stand! Ugh. Any ideas what might be going on with me? Could it be a temporary complication of the catheter?

  1. That catheter may have left you with a bladder infection.   Start drinking lots of water and call your doctor.

  2. i agree w/ the other comenters you are at risk for a bladder infection so have you doc check this out there is a medication you can ask you doctor for called pyridium its turnes your pee orange and its an anastetic for the urinary track numbing it and ive tried it and it works wonders im sure your c\doc will have no problems prescribing it for you congrats on your new baby hope you feel better soon !

  3. You may need to have the antispasmodic you are currently on increased, you may also have an infection.  Urinary bladder infections are quite common after foley catheter insertion.  You should phone your physician as soon as possible, someone is on call 24 hours.  The earlier you phone, the better.  Having a c-section only complicates the situation.  Also, your uterus contracts rapidly which also causes spasms.  Even though you had a c-section, your uterus is stretched and needs to return to it's prepregnant state.

  4. You're having bladder spasms, caused by the irritation from the foreign object that was in your bladder, or possibly a bladder infection, in addition. I had a stent placed into my kidney through my bladder when I had kidney stone surgery, and my bladder spasmed (VERY painfully) every time I urinated.

Tell your doctor immediately. He will likely up the dosage of the anti-spasmodic, and the problem should resolve itself.

  5. Hey watch taking them pill's for bladder spasms , I took so and had the same thing happen ,it actually caused me to get a bladder infection, and since you just had a baby and all I not really sure on what to tell you to take to help with the pain, but if possible try taking some sit baths in water as hot as u can stand it and do some kellogs.

    Hope this helps Good Luck.
