Question:

Severe shin pain during running... What is it?

I love playing racquetball and tennis. I play about three to four times a week. Just recently I have been trying to further increase my cardio by running a mile or so before playing. After about 3 to 5 minutes of consecutive running the outer parts of my shins begin to throb a burn in severe pain. It gets to the point where i have to stop and the motion of pointing my toes upward (like the motion of doing calf raises) becomes impossible. Then after about 10 minutes of sitting down the pain subsides. I can play racquetball fine and i always stretch out. What could be causing this and how do i stop it...?

  1. you might have to change the shoes/sneakers that you wear while running.

Might need more stretches.  THere are people who specialize in sports massages. Maybe one of those once or twice a month could improve muscle flexibility.

If you run on pavement, is it possible for you to run on a different kind of surface?  Maybe dirt, grass or sand?

  2. you may have shin splints

    you wont always feel them

runners usually get these quite a bit

you should go to a doctor

he may tell you that you could wrap them up with a special tape

    hope i helped

im only 17, but i have been running for 7 years so i have some experience

  3. sounds like shin splints.

just because your shoes are new does not mean they are supporting your feet/knees/legs appropriately.

you may need to see a doctor, but you might want to go to a reputable, privately owned runners shoe shop. (somewhere other than foot locker, etc.)

shin splints are pretty common...good luck

  4. sounds like shin splints... and unfortunatly there isnt much to be done for them except proper rest and stretching techniques
