Severiano Ballesteros helps North East golf club arrange funds for McGregor Trophy

North East golf club is ready to host the McGregor Trophy, thanks to Severiano ‘Seve’ Ballesteros who helped them in arranging the funds.
Councilman Carl Marshall disclosed the news on Wednesday and said, “The kind words Seve Ballesteros used in supporting the golf club’s application for some help from us towards covering their costs was a factor in our decision to say yes. As an occasional
golfer myself, I understand this is an amazing accolade for Stanley’s golf club to be invited by the English Golf Union to host one of the most important tournaments for young players.”
The management of the club was short of funds and was looking for sponsors to meet the ends. They contacted several players but Ballesteros, who is recovering from a brain tumour, became the first one to join hands with them.
Ballesteros said, “I wish all the organisers and the players the very best of luck for the McGregor. I hope everything is a huge success and the event brings extra awareness for your wonderful golf club and for Durham County.”
Durham County golf captain and Moor’s Junior Liaison Officer, Nurseryman Handy told the press that he and his team were grateful to the sponsor and Seve Ballesteros who helped them cash in on the opportunity.
The support from Ballesteros helped the club arrange £23,000 worth grant from Stanley Area Action Partnership. With the financial obligations fulfilled, the club will host the trophy in which 132 players will take part on in July 2011. The players will be
served with free lunch and accommodation for their families.
England Under-16 Boys Open, which has McGregor Trophy on the bid, is a national tournament which takes place every year in Europe to promote amateurs. Many big names like Justin Rose, Edoardo Molinari and Graeme Storm rose to fame using the same platform.
Ballesteros has been out of competitive golf for quite some time, but he has not distanced himself from it in any way. The Spaniard was offered the captaincy of the Ryder Cup team in 2010 and again for 2012, but he denied it owing to health concerns. But
with this gesture, Seve has once again proved his immense love for the sport.
