  1. 'Flipsmum' is right.

The bridge doesn't begin or end actually in a town though. The English side of the bridge is several miles north of Bristol and the Welsh side of the bridge is south of Monmouth, and east of Newport.

  2. The Severn Bridge (Welsh: Pont Hafren) is a suspension bridge spanning the River Severn between South Gloucestershire, just north of Bristol, England, and Monmouthshire in South Wales, via Beachley,

The bridge was opened on 8 September 1966 by Queen Elizabeth II, who hailed it as the dawn of a new economic era for South Wales. The bridge was granted Grade I listed status in 1998.[2]

  3. You should also be aware that there are actually two Severn Bridges, the 'old' one, and the 'new' one. They're a couple of miles apart, and you can look it up on http://maps.google.co.uk

  4. The original Severn Bridge is a suspension bridge wholly in England as, at that point, the border is NOT along the River Severn. There is another bridge, the Wye Bridge, which is of box-girder construction which spans the River Wye and connects the Severn Bridge to Wales.

The Severn and Wye Bridges are now part of the M48. The nearest settlement on the eastern side is Aust (little more than a hamlet), whereas, on the other side, it is not far from the border town of Chepstow.
