My last name is Sevilla. I understand that it's a city, and capital in Anadalusia, Spain. I was wondering what the actual name "Sevilla" means?

  2. shorten name for the orginal estabilshment of 6 or 7 seven homes that were built there to form the village

  3. Information on Sevilla see http://www.spain4uk.co.uk/places/seville...

  4. the meaning of the name is not clear, there are some hyphotesis or legends:

-romans called Hispalis because its old citizens (tribe of turdetanos or tartessos) called Ispal

-there is also the legend about Sevilla was founded by Hercules and gave it to his son Hispalo [truth is it was founded (as a city, there were some villages already)by a phoenician merchant)

-and other meaning of Hispalis is fence/wall

by the way, LL in spanish is spoken like Y, sounds like seviya

  5. Seville's ancient name, in Greek, was Hispalis.
