Sevilla - A Team That Promises a Lot
Things are changing in La Liga, as a few clubs are increasing their power while others have lost a considerable hold in the league. A couple of years back, there was a bigger competition between four or five clubs. Now, Barcelona and Real Madrid have increased their strength manifolds.
The clubs that have lost their superiority are Valencia, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal. Valencia had its moments in recent years, as it was the only club that won league titles, while the whole decade was overwhelmed by either Barcelona or Real Madrid. However, this year they will be missing two of their greatest players, i.e. David Villa and David Silva.
Atletico Madrid has a great squad, but they have shown some signs of weaknesses in the previous season, with an abysmal performance in the league as well as Champions League. However, they have got quality in their squad, especially in the shape of Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero. Villarreal had some moments as well, while the most remarkable one was their Champions League semi-final. However, with Marcos Senna out of form and the lack of quality in midfield has rendered the club harmless for the big teams.
Sevilla is still a team that is showing a lot of consistency during this decade. Although, they have not been able to win a league title, or even claim the runners-up spot, but most of the time they have either found a Champions League spot or UEFA Cup position. Under Juande Ramos, Sevilla won the UEFA Cup twice, while they also came close to league title, but remained five points behind the eventual winners, Real Madrid.
Although, it will be hard for Sevilla to claim a position at the top of the table, however, they have a squad that can beat these teams in the fixtures, or at least give them a tough time. Apparently, after these two giants, Sevilla is the third best team in La Liga right now. Even during the last season, Sevilla challenged the authority of Barcelona by beating them in Copa Del Ray and eventually won the cup. Also, they beat Real Madrid in their home fixture. This shows that the team has potential to challenge top teams in La Liga, as well as in Europe.
The main player for Sevilla is, Luis Fabiano, a Brazilian born striker. Although, he does not look like a typical Brazilian, as far as his goal scoring is concerned, but he has potential to do a lot of damage to other teams. He is strong and fast, while his best trait might be his positioning to meet the crosses fed to him from the wings. He has been the top goal scorer for the club, for a long time now. In the previous season, he came up with 15 goals, which was an average performance by his standards.
Apart from Fabiano, the other centre-forward in Sevilla’s squad is Frederic Kanoute of Mali. Kanoute is not known for scoring a lot of goals, but his partnership with Fabiano is sublime. The real strength of Kanoute is his first touch, which is as lethal as any other world class player. However, his weak point is that he makes things complex for himself, due to which he often fires shots away from goal.
Probably, the most important midfielder for Sevilla is Jesus Navas, the Spanish international. The qualities of this youngster are second to none, however, due to a rare home sickness issue he is often under stress while playing outside Sevilla. However, recently these tendencies have changed, due to which he has become more explosive than any other midfielder in the club. Navas is supported by Diego Capel, on the left wing. These two youngsters have potential to pose a threat to big names in football.
Sevilla is, without a doubt, one of the clubs who can create upsets during the next season. They might not have the depth to continue a challenge throughout the next season, however, they still have the potential to challenge bigger teams and names.
