Sevilla coach targets top-six finish
Coach Antonio Alvarez revealed today that La Liga outfit Sevilla has set themselves a target to finish inside the top six of the division.
Sevilla has picked up four points in their unbeaten start to the season after winning 4-1 over Levante in the opening round of fixtures. But they struggled to break down a robust Deportivo de La Coruna defence and could only grab a point in a goalless draw.
That good early-season form has led Alvarez to believe that his side is capable of pushing for a European qualification spot this season. While he does not consider a bid for the title ahead of league giants Barcelona and Real Madrid to be his primary aim at the moment, he told Canal Sur Radio that he has targeted a finish of between third and sixth place.
He said that, “The team we have is not what it was a few years ago, and we need to be aware of real objectives. Winning the league, with Barcelona and Real Madrid, is very complicated. We have to be involved in a fight from third to sixth place.”
The manager also took the opportunity to dispel any talk of tension between himself and his star striker, Brazil international Luis Fabiano.
The 29-year-old was left out of the team which started the match against Deportivo. Fabiano’s place was handed to Alvaro Negredo because Alvarez believed that the Spaniard had been working hard in training and deserved a chance.
Alvarez said that, “Luis has played many games, and I always play those who are in the best physical condition. Alvaro has been working well, so I gave him the chance. I was wrong, but these are the decisions that I make, and I do not concern myself with debates or with what anyone else says.”
