Sevilla keeper aims for points against Barcelona
Sevilla goalkeeper Javi Varas claims that his side can stun Barcelona and pick up some points when the sides meet at the Camp Nou on Saturday, 30 October.
The Catalan giants are the defending league champions and are going into the game on the back of a 2-0 win over minnows Ceuta in the Copa del Rey. Sevilla, meanwhile, are full of confidence after a 4-0 win over Real Union in the same competition.
Varas is in line for a rare first-team appearance as regular number-one Andres Palop has been sidelined by a muscle injury and while the 28-year-old knows he has a tough task ahead of him to thwart the talents of Lionel Messi, David Villa and Andres Iniesta
et al, he can’t wait to test himself against Barca.
He told Spanish daily newspaper Marca that: “The match against Barcelona will be hard and complicated, but I had the opportunity to play at the home of Barcelona in the 2008-09 season, and some teams this year have been able to stand up to them at the Camp
Nou."
'We can surprise Barca'
“We are Sevilla, and we can surprise them. If we play as we have in recent games, we are able to do something positive on Saturday.”
Varas is in his third season with the senior side since being promoted from the Sevilla B reserve team. However, he has made just eight appearances in the league. He joined the club as a 23-year-old after plying his trade with various amateur teams in Andalusia.
Sevilla are currently sitting in sixth place after a good start to the season which has seen then claim 14 points from eight games. Victory on Saturday would see them move to two points behind Barca, who are sitting in third.
