Sewage smell in basement during freezing winter, what is the reason and how can i fix that problem?

It only happens during the winter which leads me to believe that the pipes probably freeze including the traps giving room for the gas to escape...

  1. This is really a wild guess, but remember all things contract when they get cold. Maybe your sewer line is opening up at a joint or elbow allowing these odors to escape. Try caulking around any exposed connections.


  2. You really did not give a whole lot of information here. The first thing comes to mind is the floor drain trap. It can sometimes dry out and allow gases to escape to the house. Just add a little water.  

  3. If there are floor drains in the basement floor, it is important to keep the P Traps built into the system full of water. This is what prevents sewer gas from entering. Just make sure the traps are properly filled by pouring a bucket of water into the drains from time to time.
