  1. yes

  2. Different regions have different processes.  Here's how it works in my area:

The sewer pipes run to a sewage treatment facility.  There, the sewage is "treated," by a process where all the solid waste is seperated from the liquid waste.  The solid is then transferred to tanks and transported to be used as fertilizer in non-food agriculture, such as cotton.  The liquid waste is then chemically treated to remove all harmful toxins from it.  It is then pumped back into the reservoire where we can then re-drink it... Yummee!

In other areas, there are similar processes.  Some use the waste as fuel to burn to power generators to produce electricity.

  3. In most municipalities, water goes firstly to a treatment plant where it is cleaned up physically and chemically.  Then, it is released back into the environment by way of a lake or reservoir to be reused.  You can get more regionally relevant information from your local water/sewer company.  Many have information available online.
