So I'm working on a sewing project...and I did the reverse thing on the ends of a sticth I made to make sure it wouldn't come out...but as soon as I got done sewing it- the sticth came right out- the seem looked perfect...it just fell apart immediately...it looks like sticthing on the underside of the fabric (where the bobin thing goes) is loose...what do I do to fix it?

  1. Rethread your machine.  Pull out your bobbin and clean the machine real good.  Check your bobbin and make sure it's in the casing the correct way, then reinsert the bobbin.  Sew a seam and see if that helps.  If not, change your needle.  If you're still having problems, change the tension on your bobbin.  There will either be a button or dial on your machine to change the tension with or pull your bobbin case out of the machine and look for a small s***w.  Turn this s***w clockwise to tighten the tension or counter clockwise to loosen the tension of the bobbin.  Just a tiny bit of turning is all it needs.  Turn the s***w a little, try the seam again.  If it needs to be tightened more, repeat the process until you get it the tightness you need.  Good Luck!!

  2. Betcha threaded with the presser foot down, so the upper thread didn't enter the tension.  That produces loops on the bottom of the seam and a bobbin thread that pulls out.

Check to make sure your upper tension is set to about 4 for normal sewing, and rethread the machine with the presser foot up.  Don't forget to drop it for normal sewing.

If the machine continues to have problems, unthread again. and find some well-washed cotton fabric like a bandanna or a pillowcase hem.  Moisten a fold of the fabric with rubbing alcohol or unflavored vodka and "floss" between the tension disks... there may be lint, pieces of thread or coating built up in the disks.  (If so, you may want to buy better thread.)

  3. is the presser foot down?

  4. When the seam looks good on the top but loose on the bottom, that's usually a sign that the tension needs to be adjusted.  Where/how you do that depends on the machine; usually there's a dial or lever somewhere on the front or top of the machine to do this. You might also check that the bobbin is inserted correctly.
