  1. Here is a link for free patterns. Natural fabrics feel better but usually shrink so you must buy extra fabric and wash and press before cutting out your pattern. Fabrics with some polyester blended with natural fibres turn out better when washed.

The public library usually have lots of books on sewing and designing. They show you little tricks that save time and show how to do professional looking finishes to your seams.

  2. Simplicity <>http://www.simplicity.com> has a good selection of patterns that work well for beginners.

As for fabrics, it depends upon what you're making and what you plan to do while wearing the items. Best thing to do is to note what fabrics your favorite clothes are made from and then make things from similar fabrics. The easiest to sew is your basic 100% cotton or 50% Cotton/ 50% polyester blends.

  3. go to your nearest joanns. they have a line of garments that are called "sew easy" or "1 hour dress/ skirt/ top /". believe me they are very easy and usually the pattern will tell you what fabric it is best to do the piece out of.  it just depends on what you want to make.

    good luck and have fun!!!

  4. Simplicity.com has a good listing of their newest patterns. The 'sew easy' are great for the novice or beginning sewer.

I would suggest a poly blend fabric. After you have made a few garments and your confidence is up I would suggest a 100% polyester called 'peachskin'. This is a fabulous fabric that needs very little care and nearly wrinkle free.

The cotton fabrics are easier to work with but they wrinkle very easily (like linen).

Take your time and go to a regular fabric store (JoAnn Fabrics or Hancock Fabrics); these employees all sew and can help you with the fabrics. When walking into one of these stores it can be a little over whelming and you don't know the layout.

Read the directions to the pattern over before you go to the checkout of the store. That way; if you have any questions you can ask them right then. Make sure you have all the notions that you need before you leave the store. You need to match the thread to the fabric while you are there. Remember to go one shade darker than the darker color in the fabric.

  5. Go to wal mart and look in the easy sewing section.  They usually have lots of beginner ideas.  YOu can take one of the simple patterns and make it your own, which sounds like something you like to do.
