Sewing club member starting sewing with a metal...

Our club owns Janome computerized machines and one of our members sat down and started sewing with a metal bobbin used in mechanical Kenmore machines. The machine died and yielded the Stop of Safety message. Does a certain problem occur when a metal bobbin is used by mistake?
