Sewing machine: Problem getting bobbin to...

Hi!
I just purchased a used Memory Craft 5500 sewing machine made by New Home. The dealer told me it was made by Janome 10 years ago.

I need help figuring out how to get the bobbin to wind from the spool of thread. I was shown how to place the spool into the top of the machine, and how to thread the spool to the bobbin. When I click the k**b which holds the bobbin, ready to be automatically wound from the spool, it only winds in very small increments. I press my foot on the pedal on the floor, and I cannot get the bobbin to wind quickly. The machine seems to think that I am trying to sew instead of wind the bobbin (the sewing mechinism moves up and down). The digital readout, however, is "SP" which I am assuming means "spool." Do you have an idea why the bobbin winds only in small increments instead of continuously? I have no problem getting the machine to sew.....it's just trying to get the bobbin to wind automatically that is the problem.

Thank you!
