  1. curtains. very easy and todays curtains never have your color when looking in the store  . curtains are my other favorite past.time.you can come up with neat things.

  2. Sewing is great! You'll love it. But get a live person to show you how to use the machine. It's not hard but it will be very frustrating if you try to go it alone.

Sheets are not easy to make. They're bulky and they pull in funny directions. you'll get bored of pillowcases after the first one.  Go through the pattern books in the fabric store and get some cute patterns labelled "easy". If you don't have a live person to show you how to lay out a pattern, get the book "sewing for dummies".

  3. A pillowcase is a good starting point.  As far as a machine, if you don't have one, I just replaced my $1,400 Singer with a $89 Kenmore and it does the job just fine.  I don't care for the electronic machines any more.  If you are a professional seamstress who does lots of fancy stuff, fine, but for every day stuff, go with a basic machine. Less stuff to tear up and get repaired, too.  Here's one of my best tips when starting to sew; start with easy to handle fabrics like cottons and woven blends.  They don't slide around on you and they sew pretty easily.  ALWAYS wash and dry the fabric BEFORE cutting it out.  That way, shrinkage won't ruin the fit later on.  How many times have you bought something that fit just right only to wash it and not be able to get into it any more?  Exactly.  So do the wash/dry before the cutting out.  Take a pillowcase you already have and measure it width by length.  Add an inch or maybe a little more for seam allowances, and add about 4" on the long side for the open hem.  It's usual to have 5/8" for seam allowance, but I go with a half sometimes.  You can cut out the pillowcase so that you only have a seam on the end and down one side by using the folded edge as one of the sides.  Just lay the existing pillowcase down with one long edge on the fabric fold and cut out around it, adding a half inch or so for seam allowance and four inches on the hemmed end.  Sew the end and side right sides together, then fold under the hem 1/2", then 3 1/2" and sew down.  Finished.  Curtains are easy, too.

  4. Making a simple pillow case would be a good place to start and then as your skills improve you can add various trim and details.  I would recommend a simple sewing machine to begin with, so you don't get overwhelmed with all the gadgets and k***s of an expensive machine. Most of all, relax and enjoy yourself! Happy sewing!

  5. simple cotton pajama pants/ shorts are what i started with. you may want to take a class because you have to buy a pattern. using a pattern isn't easy and someone else will have to teach you. once you learn though its great to choose what you want everything to look like!
