Question:

Sewing machine restoration Los Angeles area?

Question Details: I bought a sewing machine form an antique shop in Mexico. It's from the 1800's, but its in bad shape. I'm sure there must be some place in L.a. where they can point me in the right direction as far as cleaning it up. I'm not getting my hopes up as far as full restoration but I want it to at least look nice. Any ideas? Thanks.

  1. From the 1800s?  Are you sure?  I'd suggest checking in the phone book for a sewing machine repair shop.  Phone them.  Pick a time of day when they are not likely to be terribly rushed, since you're not a paying customer.  Ask if they know of anyone who restores old sewing machines, even as a hobby.  If this doesn't work, try the same thing with an antique shop.

If you know the model number or any good info on your machine, type it into Google and see what comes up.  You may even find a site sponsored by some antique sewing machine club, if such things exist.  Follow any leads you get.  If there is a club, they would certainly know who restores these machines.

  2. There are a number of Yahoo Groups who can help you to find a restoration place. wefixit is one of them. vintage_treadlesewingmachines sounds like another that may be useful.

But you can go here and find about 10 more:

  3. Feel like doing it yourself?  Try joining the yahoo group "wefixit".  Lots of good information there.

  4. I agree WEFIXIT will have you doing it yourself...just ask away!
