Sewing machine stitching funny

Question

I have a new home jd 1822 machine. This morning, it began stitching funny. The needle keeps adding a zigzag so straight stiches look like:_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ / /And zigzag stiches look like: _ _ / / / / and so one through all the stitch types.How do I reset/correct it?I have tried various stich lengths and widths, turning it on and then off, going through the entire dial of stitches, changing thread tension. I'm lost.
