i don't have a sewing machine but i want to sew a tote bag. if i backstitch while hand sewing, will the backstitch be as strong as if i used a sewing machine to make the backstitch? thnks.

  1. Sure.  You can also do a running stitch interrupted by the occasional backstitch.... faster and just as secure.

    Keep the stitches uniform in size and tension.

    How are you going to finish the cut edges?  I'd suggest a felled or french seam.


  2. Actually, a tight running stitch will be more than strong enough for a tote bag and it will take a fraction of the time.

  3. It can be. Just make sure your stitches are uniform and tight.

    Remember, that people sewed by hand for YEARS before sewing machines. Sewing machines just made uniform stitching and sewing able to be done faster!

Yes, it can work if you make small stitches and keep your thread taut -- not tight, just taut.  Be sure you anchor your handles securely or make a "sling handle" that goes under the bottom of the bag for extra stability.  Also, it's a good idea to not have a seam on the bottom of the bag.  Use the fold of the fabric for that.
