Sewing question top thread?

Question

when you thread the sewing machine with the top/upper thread, and put the thread through the needle's hole, do you just put the upper thread in the back or does it have to go under the presser foot.

After you thread the needle, both that thread and the one drawn up through the bobbin go under the presser foot.
