s*x offenders registry... in the uk can we see whos on it?

i think someone i know is on it! i have been meaning to lok in to it for years but was uncertain if it is possible to see whos in it / on it!

if it is possible how doi go about getting this info! sorry for the unsettling subject! thanks for your help!

The general public don't have access to this information, only people who work with young people, teachers etc.

(ANS) Information held on the UK s*x offender database is NOT open to the general public. The information in the UK registry is treated as confidential under the data protection act. Therefore you cannot find out if some you know, or suspect is a s*x offender or has a history of sexual offenses.

**NOTE: UK data protection laws are completely different from data protection laws in the USA.

Once you have clicked through a few sites re the s*x offenders register, you very quickly reach the conclusion that there are quite a few people on the register who should not be.  In other words, the s*x offenders register is something like the Anti-s*x League of 1984.

If the s*x offenders register contained only the names and details of violent s*x offenders, phaedophiles, rapists etc., then we could start taking it seriously.  But with stupid inclusions such as the prat who had it off with a bicycle - just makes you wannt laff out loud.

In the UK, the s*x offenders register isnt open to public viewing.

There isnt anywhere the public can view it... ie, it isnt on the internet, or anything like that.

The only way you could find out is if you have a specific and valid concern about someone whom you suspect is a s*x offender.  An example would be, if you suspected that someone on it was working illegaly with children, etc... then you could phone the police and let them make the enquiries.  Even then you arent guaranteed to be told by them.

Unfortunatley human rights and data protection means that people on the s*x offenders are protected in this way.
