  1. Uh, it's the other way around in my life.

The only thing I can think of right now is that Indian parents put a lot of pressure on the man making money, while it's okay for the girl to be uneducated. If you don't make a lot of money, Indian parents don't want you to marry their daughter..even if their daughter didn't go to college.

    That's unfair, I think.

  2. I have. I'm an Indian.

In some Indian cities, front bus entrances are reserved for women. Doesn't that sound familiar? And women can sit on men's seats while men can't sit on women's seats. Luggage doesn't matter, those are the rules. Though it isn't required by law, I saw a man being called an insensitive person for not giving up his seat to a standing woman. I was lugging five heavy bags, and no giggling schoolgirl or chatting woman got up to at least offer space for my bags. I dumped them under the conductor's seat and had to pay for them. I needn't have paid if I had found (or had been given) a place to sit.

And I'm fed bigotry everyday in school about how women are pure and virtuous and men are devilish ogres whose favourite hobby is rape and domestic violence, how women are nurturing and gentle and men are violent ruffians who couldn't care less about commitment and family, how women are more dignified and stronger than men, and more and more hogwash.

This is far too common and far too ignored sadly.

EDIT: The extent to which foreigners are misinformed about India is appalling. Do you know sati was abolished in the 19th century, and there hasn't been a single reported case since 1990? You're a bit behind the times. As for dowry, an anti-dowry law was passed in 1960, and 98% of the cases registered under it were false accusations. That speaks volumes about sexism against men in India.

You foreigners can now stop calling India a patriarchy, because the matriarchy here is more covert here than in the west. And the President is a woman. Did anybody read the links in the Wikipedia article's sources?

  3. Oh YES, India is famous for its anti-men bias.  You see men committing suttee all the time and women regularly abort male fetuses in the hopes of becoming pregnant with a girl instead because females are oh-so-very-valued in that society....

Did you happen to notice "This article has been nominated to be checked for its neutrality"?

    Its garbage.

  4. Yes, India is famous for its anti-men attitude. In fact, the country is so sexist that it sucks. You feel like you have committed a crime for being a man. Females like Curly are to be solely blamed for this. She is a Female Chauvinist B(i)tch (FCB).

  5. thats kinda funny because I've heard in ALL of my Anthro classes that its the opposite,  & female infanticide is very common in India. Women can be hard to marry off without a dowry, causing economic hardship to their families. The government is even offering financial incentives for men to marry women from lower castes in an effort to make the social class system less rigid.

  6. Truly garbage. The way women are treated in India is appalling. I was thinking of joining Peace Corps and going to Africa, but then thought of a place like India to encourage women.
