Students will research a current event that has taken place in a nation outside of the United States (preferably in a nation we have studied this year). The current event may have happened in the past six months. Students will Google “world news” in order to gain sites for the activity. Reputable sources for current events may include the BBC news site, CNN, ABC, WN (World News), LA Times, or any other appropriate news site. Students should find an interesting article, but one that pertains to “Where’s the PIRATES.” They will understand what this means. It is basically an acronym for the characteristics of a civilization. Students should then write a one-page response that answers the following:

What led you to choose this article? What interests you about it?

How does this article relate to anything we have studied this year?

What were the causes and the effects of your event?

What are your opinions concerning the current event?

The one-page should be single-spaced and written. They can write more than one page.

Students should also put the name of the site they used at the bottom of their paper.
