Shaaban Hussin likely to miss the cut at the Maybank Malaysian Open – Golf News
Shaaban Hussin, through nine holes in the second round, was two-under par when Mother Nature forced the Maybank Malaysian Open officials to call off the day on Friday.
With this performance, Hussin is likely to make the cut for the fifth time in his professional career. Hussin was the only Malaysian player to record an under par score in the opening round of the tournament.
Another under-par score will confirm his place in the final two rounds as the cut is expected to be made at equal or one-over par.
He started off with a birdie on the very first hole he played, followed by a bogey on the second. Thereafter, he recorded birdie-birdie-bogey-birdie starting from the fourth hole.
According to him, he could have done even better if the game was not suspended. He said that he was in a great form and momentum. That is always a good thing for a player contending in a big tournament.
“I felt like I was on a momentum and I could have gone lower if the play was not suspended,” Shaaban said.
“My rhythm and tempo was good. Looking at the scores of the leader, I think I have a good chance of closing the gap on them, but I shall not get aggressive. I think the goal is to stay calm and score when I can”.
At the time of the suspension, he was five strokes behind the clubhouse leaders, Jbe Kruger and Otto Hennie, who both finished at nine-under par for two rounds.
Among the Malaysian amateurs participating in the event, Low Khai was the highest listed player on the leaderboard.
He carded another 73 to finish two-over par for the 36 holes. According the current leaderboard situation, he may not be able to make the cut.
Yet, he believes it was a great experience for him to play among the great players.
“I’ve learnt a lot, and that every shot is crucial because if you miss a shot, the closer you get to missing the cut. I can say that I’ve fulfilled my goal for the week, which was to score under 74 in each round,” said Low.
Meanwhile, the overnight leader, Charl Schwartzel, was out of his touch as he carded four bogeys and a birdie through 11 holes to tie for the 12th position.
