Shabbir Iqbal ready to defend title at Chief of Naval Staff Golf Championship
Pakistani ace Shabbir Iqbal is all set to defend his title at the 16th edition of Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Golf Championship, which kicks off on June 30, at the par-72 Karachi Golf
Club. The tournament carrying a purse of Rs 3.5-million is one of the most prolific events on the Pakistan Golf Federation schedule.
Iqbal, who became the first Pakistani golfer to qualify and represent Pakistan in 2009 World Cup Golf held in China, attended a practice session at the par-72 course and addressed the press to answer few questions.
He said while speaking to reporters, “CNS Golf had always been my favourite event because I have won 5-6 times and I belong to Pakistan Navy.”
While commenting on the weather conditions prevalent on the course, the player said, “Weather is friendly here. But it will be strong wind which will posing us problem. My mission is to maintain my domination in the championship.
Like for all others, strong wind will be challenge but I am ready to tackle the situation.”
A grand figure of 300 golfers will be competing in the tournament, who will be facing the threat of strong torrential winds on the undulating fairways of the golf course. Included in the field are Matloob Ahmed, Muhammad Munir, Imdad
Hussain, Shahid Javed Khan and Aadil Jehangir.
According to Iqbal, the players who pose the greatest threat to his title are Ahmed, Munir and Hussain. He said that he was looking forward for a healthy competition that would help him generate more memories and promote the sport
in the region.
Iqbal will be part of the first of three events that will take place in the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Golf Championship. All professionals, amateurs and senior players from all over the country have been invited to take part in the
series of tournaments that will stretch on a span of 12 days.
The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Golf Championship has become a flagship event of Pakistan Golf Federation, a body that runs all the golf tournaments held in the region.
