Shah Rukh Khan defends KKR felicitation ceremony – Cricket News Update
Shah Rukh http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Khan-c71319, Bollywood celebrity and co-owner of the Indian Premier League 5 winning Kolkata Knight Riders franchise, has spoken out in support of the felicitation ceremony organised for the tournament champions by the West Bengal government, saying there
is no need to criticise the celebrations.
“There is no harm in being happy and sharing happiness. Nobody should criticise it,” he said in regards to the celebrations that have been deemed unnecessarily extravagant by many. “Let's not be political. It has been done because we all are happy. There
is nothing wrong if we bring a bit of happiness to the city of joy.”
The Kolkata Knight Riders, who have failed to win a single title since the inception of the tournament in 2008, finally lifted their maiden IPL title this year, after a 5-wicket win over the defending champions, the Chennai Super Kings, in the final held
on May 27.
“It is a humble moment … For the last four seasons, all the KKR players and our families were moving with a desire to win the cup,” the actor said.
“We had all come from different states - some had come from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Delhi-c780 - and made this city our home. So we wanted to win the hearts of the Kolkatans.”
A massive celebration ceremony was organized for the newly-crowned champions by the West http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bengal-c771 government, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor M K Narayanan having organised the event. The victorious team was driven through the city amidst
a parade, with crowds estimated to be 50,000 strong, and the entire city was brought to a standstill.
The team reached the Writers' Buildings, where they were congratulated by the CM, and the parade proceeded to the Eden Gardens stadium, which had been thrown open to the public for the celebrations.
The CM and Governor lavished expensive gifts on the team, including golden lockets, while the Cricket Association of Bengal also presented the players with a 10-gram gold chain each.
However, the celebrations came to an unsavory and chaotic end, with crowds being beaten back by the police, resulting in several injuries. In addition to the extravagance of the event, the celebrations were also criticised for having brought business in
the city to a standstill, merely in order to congratulate a club team.
